About the Story of Shin Megami Tensei V

story

This is my impression after clearing the Law Route.

This is not a comprehensive review of the story.

As an RPG, I think the story is stable and good.

However, I’m not sure if the story is going to be accepted by Megaten fans.

Maybe I feel that way because I have only cleared the Law Route.

However, as someone who started with Megaten 4, I found it a bit underwhelming.

Perhaps the story had to be assembled in a safe way in order to make the graphics and systems 120% of what they should be.

About Shin Megami Tensei V’s System

Shin Megami Tensei V's System

I find the controls and battle system to be excellent.

  • Devil’s movement
  • Constantly tense battles
  • Map graphics

I think I particularly enjoyed these elements.

The battle system, in particular, is designed to be enjoyed by both RPG beginners and advanced players.

As for exploring Da’at, I felt that it would be nice if there were more clear hints on the map.

Some of the terrain was quite complex, and I struggled as I am not good at action…

Other points of concern

Is the protagonist really a human being?

human

The protagonist was so inorganic that I wondered if he had any feelings.

Perhaps, in other routes, we can see a different expression.

However, from the beginning of the story to after I cleared the game, my impression of the protagonist was consistently more inorganic and mechanical than that of Aogami.

Maybe in other routes, we can see a more expressive protagonist.

However, compared to the other characters, the doll-like protagonist bothered me.

Who is your favorite character?

character

At the moment, Abdiel is my favorite character.

I think she’s the true heroine of Megaten 5.

What do you think?

Of all the angels I’ve seen so far, I felt that she was a human angel in a good way.

Of course, there were parts during the game where I thought, “Oh, that’s just the way she said it…”, but I won’t mention the specific scenes because that would spoil it.

I’m wondering what fate will befall Abdiel, who has both an angelic, inflexible side and a human charm, in the other route.

How right are my preliminary thoughts?

thoughts

I think it’s about 50/50 between a hit and a miss in my opinion.

This blog has published several prediction discussion articles before the release date of Megaten 5.

I started this because I thought it would be interesting to revisit the article after playing it to see how much of my predictions were right or wrong.

Some of my predictions were wildly wrong, so I’m personally satisfied.

Summary: Too safe for Megaten, but a good RPG.

RPG
  • A good RPG game.
  • The story is not very Megaten-like, but it still reflects the society.
  • The puppet-like protagonist is annoying in a bad way.

I think it is a good game to recommend to people who have never played Megaten before, or to light gamers who like RPGs.

However, in my personal opinion, I felt that the main story was a little lacking.

If I had to sum up the characteristics of Megaten 5 in one word, I would say that it is a mythical story with an emphasis on the relationship between humans and demons.

As a royal road RPG, it is a good story that is somewhat honorable.

However, it’s a pity that the aggressive depiction of Megaten and the relationships with ordinary people are not as strong as in Megaten 4.

(As a story/worldview oriented person, I think I prefer Megaten 4…)

However, since I have only cleared one route, I may have a different opinion after clearing other routes.

I’m glad that there are plenty of sub-quests, etc., so I can enjoy the game even after the second week.
